EXTENDED PRESS RELEASE TEXT

ABOUT THE HEADLINING MUSICIANS

JOHN RENBOURN

One of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists, John Renbourn’s unique sound is a fusion of British and Celtic folk music with jazz, country blues, ragtime, classical, Middle Eastern and pre-Renaissance music -- a style often called “folk-baroque.”

As a teenager, Renbourn played folk and blues guitar in his hometown of Torquay in southwest England. In 1964, after two years studying classical guitar at the George Abbot School in Guildford, a twenty-year-old Renbourn moved to London to break into the Soho folk circuit and to record solo albums for Transatlantic Records. There he met fellow guitarist Bert Jansch and singer Jacqui McShee, with whom he founded the seminal British folk-rock ensemble Pentangle in 1967. Pentangle’s pioneering combination of traditional folk melodies with jazz improvisations created an influence that continues to inspire musicians around the world. From 1967 through 1978 the group’s career spanned six albums, numerous television appearances and three movie soundtracks, as well as several American and world tours.

Then John continued as a soloist, recording memorable albums like The Hermit and The Black Balloon, before forming the John Renbourn Group, which integrated Indian tabla with guitar and jazz reeds. A subsequent partnership with Stefan Grossman yielded several albums and world tours. Ship of Fools, a return to the ensemble format, explored John’s interest in Celtic music, as does his latest recording Wheel of Fortune, with Scottish harper and storyteller Robin Williamson. Both Wheel of Fortune and the John Renbourn Group’s Live in America were nominated for Grammy Awards.

John Renbourn and Robin Williamson often tour together, and John has continued an active solo career. He also maintains his artistic relationships with Jansch and McShee, with Stefan Grossman and with jazz guitarist Larry Coryell. And more recently he has developed a stunning two-guitar show with American expatriate Isaac Guillory.

A John Renbourn concert takes the listener into a rich musical landscape of warm vocals and witty asides about the history of the songs. At the core is a revolutionary guitar style that explores the instrument’s potential in unusual and beautiful ways, created and performed by a consummate master.

WOODLAND

In the Fall of 1998, after five years of performing at West Coast festivals and touring with Celtic rock band Spirit Union, Kelly and Emilio Miller-Lopez started writing and production for a new and unusual project. Kelly’s background in Celtic myth and Shakespearean theatre, and Emilio’s skills as a songwriter and music producer converged to create the mythical music of Woodland.

Soon after producing their first EP ‘Heritage’, Woodland connected with Devon, UK artist Brian Froud, and started producing Faerie themed masquerades and events weaving together their music with lightshows of Froud world-renowned art. The events quickly caught on and before long the shows grew from a few hundred participants to major outdoor festivals with thousands in attendance.

As Brian said in a recent interview with Four Corners Magazine, “When we heard the music of Woodland, we thought how wonderful it was and we were intrigued with the possibilities of how ideas sort of flow outward and get larger... We just wanted to help, encourage and expand the world. We put my images together with the music and we received a delighted reaction from the audience.”

In 2004 the ensemble relocated to the Pacific Northwest, after five years as a festival and theatre headliner throughout Arizona, New Mexico and California. Woodland was welcomed to Oregon with a main stage gig at the Country Fair, and as a Saturday night headliner at the Faerieworlds Festival at Hornings Hideout near Portland. The bands rich poetic lyrics steeped in Celtic myth, married with the groups ability to jam live, has made Woodland one of the most talked about acts in the northwest festival scene this year.

The ornate vocal harmonies of Kelly and Emilio Miller-Lopez are poetic invocations with dynamic and tight counterpoint melodies. The bands live improvisations soar, with interwoven melodic grooves and energetic rhythm interludes by master percussionists Jarrod Kaplan and Vash. Fiddler Kimmy Smith adds a traditional edge to the bands original sound, with a diverse repertoire of Celtic jigs and reels. Woodland’s self-produced Faerie Masquerade events have been hugely successful for five years, with attendance between 400-4000 per event.

Emilio and Kelly Miller-Lopez are the founders and primary songwriters in Woodland. Kelly plays harp, Celtic whistle and native flute and sings lead vocals. Emilio plays guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals, and writes a large amount of the music and poetry for the band. Woodland also features fiddler Kimmy Smith (Spirit Union), drummer Jarrod Kaplan (Trillian Green) and bassist and didjeridu player Donald Brodsky.

Live, the bands performances journey between soft sensual acoustic sounds and melody-driven rhythmic tribal rock. For years Woodland concerts and faerie Masquerades have coincided with ancient mythic holidays such as solstices, equinoxes and full moons, with their multi-generational audience arriving at events adorned in masks, robes, horns, wings and crowns in celebration.

TRILLIAN GREEN

In 1994, TRILLIAN GREEN: Ben Klein (Silver Flute), Christine Gunn (Cello), and Jarrod Kaplan (Percussion) met and began performing at The Oregon Country Fair. Soon after, The Trio developed their act on the Streets of Seattle, performing guerrilla style at Bumbershoot, Folklife, The Fremont Fair, The University Street Fair, and many other festive events.

Trillian Green’s music, and act, had an appeal to audiences of all ages & walks of life. Younger audiences were drawn to the band’s energy & mystique, as well as the dance-ability of the music. Older audiences enjoyed the band’s acoustic instrumentation & melodic sensibility; and the fact that the group didn’t have to play loud to convey the music’s power & intensity. Universally, the band’s chemistry & connection with the audience was very entertaining to be a part of other’s shows. Cafes & venues harbored Acoustic Musicians, and with a thriving scene of supportive fans, there was a sense that the “Post-Grunge Seattle Music Scene” had arrived.

From the stage, at a sold out Black Citroen show in 1995, Ben Klein coined the term, “THE ACOUSTIC REVOLUTION,” with an inspired declaration that Acoustic Music could powerfully & forcefully take over the mainstream music realm. Soon after, Jarrod Kaplan (the band’s Percussionist & Manager) further defined the term to describe the scene that “revolved around” the creation of Acoustic Music. With Trillian Green as the catalyst, Jarrod started OMNIVINE RECORDS and AGENCY to distribute recordings for, and book many of the acts within, the Acoustic Revolutionary Family of bands.

Trillian Green independently released “Metamorphoses” on May 1st 1997, just in time for Festival season. By the end of the summer the band was receiving airplay on over 25 West Coast radio stations, as well as 2 nationally syndicated shows (Hearts of Space & Echoes), and could be found in most record stores along their tour route. Further however, internet savvy fans were spreading word of the music, and mail-orders were coming in from all over the world.

Classically, as the band’s success accelerated, so did the pressures to write, perform, and appear in the public eye more often. Unfortunately, at the time, this type of success and pressure was new to the band. The intense personalities that normally gelled to create such powerful and amazing music, soon polarized, and each member decided to go their own way…

With time came growth, experience, and healing.

6 years later, as fate would have it, Jarrod crossed paths with the producers of a major Fantasy/Faerie-Realm inspired Celtic Musical event called Faerie Worlds (www.FaerieWorlds.com). Emilio & Kelly Miller-Lopez had recently moved to Eugene, and were seeking to renew the line-up of their Band, Woodland; the centerpiece act of their event. As long-time Trillian Green Fans, they dually propositioned Jarrod to perform with Woodland, and have Trillian Green reunite for a performance at their next Faerie Worlds Event.

On August 1st, 2004, Trillian Green reunited at Horning’s Hideout (N. Plains, OR) for an exclusive performance at The Faerie Worlds Festival. Reawakened to their powerful musical chemistry, the band put on a tremendous show, and soon after became thirsty to perform again…

KAN’NAL

Primal rhythm, swirling dancers, ancient instruments and futuristic technologies blend with mythic archetypes and alternative rock to create a musical, visual, sensual experience. Kan’Nal’s “Shamanic Rock,” documented on their Sony Red debut, Dreamwalker, conveys the power of these spectacles.

For years, songwriter/vocalist Tzol was drawn to explore Mexico and Central America. On one particular journey in early 2001, Tzol met guitarist Tierro in the village of San Marcos on the magical lake Atitlan. Writing songs and performing together in Guatemala inspired them to capture their vision on an album.

After recording the first Kan’Nal CD in Tierro’s hometown Toronto, the two returned to lake Atitlan the following year. At their very first show, they were joined by songwriter/bassist Rodolfo Escobar and performance artist Teresita Hinojosa. With this addition Kan’Nal gained a new visual and mystical dimension. Living together near the lake, all four drew inspiration from the beauties and hardships that surrounded them.

One by one the group encountered the others destined to join their tribe. Aaron Jerad, another traveler on “La Ruta Maya,” came into the picture while they were visiting the Yucatan peninsula. His foundational percussion and solid didgeridoo playing added further elements of trance and rhythm Leaving Mexico they added Gilly Gonzalez, whose ferocious drumming had made him a figure of legend in Texas. Completing the circle, artist and dancer Akayate joined the band in Colorado. Her gift for costume design and movement enhanced the band’s visual and storytelling elements.

The music... the dances... the story-songs proclaim “tear down the borders...unite the colors... bring down the fire and walk as one” (“Gypsy”) and demand “shake my bones ‘til they shatter/shake my soul like a rattle” (“Desert Flower”) These are the cries that have flown over the Nevada desert at Burning Man, sounded from the Rockies at Dreamtime in Colorado, and echoed through the Earthdance Festival in California, drawing thousands of listeners to join Kan’Nal on their journey.

One people, one color, one earth.

THE SUGAR BEETS

Playing their own style of high-energy acoustic music, the Sugar Beetsare unlike any contem-

porary band on the scene today. Defined by impeccable musicianship, multiple singers and songwriters, and unbeatable live performances, their soul-empowering groove can convince even the most catatonic listener to get up and dance. The music draws from the foot-stomping traditions of bluegrass, Celtic, and old-time fiddle music yet is inextricably woven to the worlds of Motown, gospel, coun- try, and pop. Uplifting and always evolving, it is no wonder that the Sugar Beets have enjoyed an increasing and devout Northwest following throughout their ten-year existence.

The Sugar Beets fifth album, Sweet Ride Home, recorded by former Windham Hillartist Bill Oskay, overflows with a myriad of musical styles woven together into a signature sound that is as unique as a disco house party at the Grand Ole Opry. While the opening track, Higher, an energetic, tightly arranged soul tune, highlights the powerful lead and harmony vocals of Megan and Brianna Bassett, the lively calypso jam on Bill Blake, exemplifies the group’s stylistic diversity and the dynamic three and four part vocal harmonies fans have come to expect at their live performances. Each song represents a new angle from which to view their cohesiveness and intricate instrumental arrangements.

A common thread throughout the album and a key to under- standing the bands impressive live performances is the explicit sense of inspiration and positivity communicated through the music. Light-hearted and optimistic, the songs take the listener to a place where, if only for a brief time, life’s worries and complications are put aside. From the resounding realizations of childhood mistakes in Rome to the importance of human connection in You Are The Shine, each tune expresses a sense of joy and appreciation for life- both worldly and unworldly.

The Sugar Beets have played together for over ten years, sometimes taking breaks, but all the while solidifying the friendships and musical bond that inspires them to keep playing. They possess a unique ability to connect and move their audience. As one fan exclaims, “when you [the Sugar Beets] get on stage our bad moods disappear along with yours and music, spirits, and festiveness reign supreme!” Perhaps this is why the Eugene Weekly, in their hometown of Eugene, Oregon voted them “best band”for the past three years.

It may also explain the reason they have become perennial headliners at renowned festivals like the Oregon Country Fair, Willamette Valley Folk Festival, the Northwest Folk Life Festival in Seattle, Oregon Folk Life Festival, and the Ollala Bluegrass Festival. Whatever the reason, each Sugar Beets member is intent on making sure the audience has the time of their lives.

What began as a fun-loving college bluegrass and old-time ensemble in 1990 has transformed into a professional band that may play a major part in revitalizing the Northwest’s acoustic music scene. And while the Sugar Beats have had the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of The String Cheese Incident, Peter Rowan, Afro-Celt Sound System, Richie Havens, Ani DiFranco, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, Merle Saunders, Robert Hunter, they show no signs of giving way. With several tours planned in support of the new album, a growing fan base, and an outlook on life that is tough to beat, they will no doubt secure themselves as one of the regions most revered up and coming live acts.

ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTISTS

BRIAN FROUD

Acclaimed UK internationally bestselling artists and authors Brian and Wendy Froud will be returning to the Faerieworlds Festival this year. The event will feature a gallery showing of originals of Brian Froud, site Froud banners and design, and a Faerie lightshow featuring the artwork of Brian Froud. The Froud’s son Toby, the famed baby stolen by David Bowie in the Henson film “Labyrinth” will be attending and performing at this years event as well.

For over 25 years, Brian Froud’s significant accomplishments have spanned a wide variety of media and a diverse range of applications. Internationally regarded as an authority on faeries and faery lore, Brian’s lifetime fascination with the world of faery has provided the foundation of his diverse and highly original creative life. The international best-selling book, FAERIES with fantasy and Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee is considered a modern classic. His work with Jim Henson as conceptual designer on feature films THE DARK CRYSTAL, LABYRINTH and other Henson projects set new standards for design, puppeteering and animatronics in film and are considered landmarks in the evolution of modern day special effects and have attracted an international cult following.

Born in Winchester in 1947, Brian Froud graduated with Honours from Maidstone College of Art in 1971 with a degree in Graphic Design. Soon after, Froud began working in London on various projects ranging from book jackets, magazine covers to advertising as well as illustrating several children books. A couple of years, later Brian Froud moved to Devon and stayed with fellow artist Alan Lee and his family. Froud continued to illustrate children books as well as find time to create and publish his own artwork (such images can be found in THE LAND OF FROUD and ONCE UPON A TIME).

In 1978, Brian Froud and Alan Lee put together an ensemble of drawings and paintings which the world adored: FAERIES became an international bestseller, hitting the number four spot on the New York Times Best Seller List. Brian Froud’s artistic techniques and wisdom of folklore caught the eyes of many, including Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets. In 1978, Jim Henson hired Froud to create a unique otherworld, better known as THE WORLD OF THE DARK CRYSTAL. The film “The Dark Crystal” was a monumental collaboration of ideas, techniques, and creativity. On the set of “The Dark Crystal”- released in 1982, Brian Froud met Wendy Midener, a puppet designer (creator of the “Gelflings” and Star Wars’ “Yoda”). Their son Toby starred in the Henson film, “Labyrinth”- 1986, in which Brian Froud was once again hired as the Conceptual Designer. Froud continued working with Henson on television programs such as “Jim Henson’s Storyteller,” as well as working on designs for other film/media projects. Froud also began to collaborate with the screenwriter of “Labyrinth,” Terry Jones. He contributed to several Froud books including the international best selling phenomenon, LADY COTTINGTON’S PRESSED FAIRY BOOK and STRANGE STAINS AND MYSTERIOUS SMELLS.

Brian has continued to revolutionize the concept of “faery” for modern readers. In 1998, Brian published the sequel to Froud/Lee’s best selling FAERIES, GOOD FAERIES/BAD FAERIES, which became a highly acclaimed and an international best seller, as did the book / cards set, THE FAERIES’ ORACLE. In 2002, Brian created the long awaited Lady Cottington sequel, LADY COTTINGTON’S FAIRY ALBUM and the 25th Anniversary Edition of FAERIES with new art and introductions by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, both published by Abrams Books. He also released his first musical project, “FAERIES: A Musical Companion to the Art of Brian Froud,” an Enhanced CD from Windham Hill / RCA Victor /BMG. In 2003, Brian released THE RUNES OF ELFLAND with text by Ari Berk, published by Abrams Book as well as the 20th Anniversary Edition of THE WORLD OF THE DARK CRYSTAL. Brian’s new book, GOBLINS! with text by Ari Berk will be released this Fall by Abrams Books. He and Ari are currently working on the next Lady Cottington book, LADY COTTINGTON’S PRESSED FAIRY LETTERS. Through Imaginosis, who represents the Frouds, Brian has several highly successful lines of licensed merchandise and is also involved in film and media projects.

TONY DITERLIZZI

Acclaimed children’s book creator, Tony DiTerlizzi was born into an artistic household on September 6, 1969. Being the first of three visually adept children, it didn’t take long for his family and friends to realize that he was one strange, but talented lad. At an early age Tony began embracing the whimsical, the wondrous, and the surreal, all of which sparked his wild imagination. That said, it is apropos that his spooky picture book of Mary Howitt’s classic poem The Spider and the Fly (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2002) brought him much fame and accolades. His fantastic vision garnered him the 2003 Caldecott Honor Medal and the moniker of New York Times best-selling author/illustrator.

Tony grew up in South Florida amid palm trees and year-round sunshine. While he enjoyed collecting insects, snorkeling, and camping, he also loved to draw and read. During this time he was introduced to the work of Norman Rockwell, Arthur Rackham, Dr. Suess, Roald Dahl, and Jim Henson, all of whom inspired him and became major creative influences. With the support of family and teachers, Tony was able to cultivate his natural artistic talents. In college, he honed these talents at the Florida School of the Arts and later, at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where he earned a degree in Graphic Design in 1992.

After college, Tony began a freelance illustration career, working for TSR’s Dungeons & Dragons role–playing game. He continued to illustrate within the gaming field for most of the ‘90s, working on games such as Planescape, Changeling and the trading card phenomenon, Magic the Gathering, thus forging a place for himself in the field of fantasy art.

After seven years of successful work as a fantasy artist, Tony delved into a new field, that of creating children’s picture books. With the publication in 2000 of Jimmy Zangwow’s Out-of-this-World Moon Pie Adventure (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers), Tony fulfilled a childhood dream of writing and illustrating his own book. Jimmy, which was lauded by critics, was followed the next year by Ted (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers), which also received high praise, including the 2002 Zena Sutherland Award. Tony has also illustrated the Alien & Possum series by Tony Johnston (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers); Ribbiting Tales (Penguin/Putnam Books); and the star-studded Once Upon A Fairy Tale (Viking Books) in which all proceeds benefit Steven Spielberg’s Starbright Foundation.

Continuing with his passion for fantasy, Tony has lent his vision to an array of noted author’s works including J.R.R.Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey, Bruce Coville, and Peter Beagle. In an effort to bring fantasy to younger readers, he and good friend (and author) Holly Black co-created the The Spiderwick Chronicles. Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing launched the series in 2003 where it was met with immediate success. Children and adults alike loved the adventures of Simon, Jared, and Mallory Grace in a world of faeries, trolls and goblins. Since then, Spiderwick has been published all over the world and translated in over 20 languages. 2005 marks a highlight in Tony’s career with the publication of Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You a complete culmination of his passion for fantasy combined with his love for children’s literature.

Tony lives and works in western Massachusetts with his wife (and manager) Angela, and their pug, Goblin.
