John Renbourn
|
FEATURED MUSICIAN:
JOHN RENBOURN
One of the world's foremost fingerstyle guitarists, John Renbourn's unique sound is a fusion of British and Celtic folk music with jazz, country blues, ragtime, classical, Middle Eastern and pre-Renaissance music -- a style often called "folk-baroque." Renbourn and fellow guitarist Bert Jansch and singer Jacqui McShee founded the seminal British folk-rock ensemble Pentangle in 1967. Pentangle's pioneering combination of traditional folk melodies with jazz improvisations created an influence that continues to inspire musicians around the world.
|
| |
From 1967 through 1978 the group's career spanned six albums, numerous television appearances and three movie soundtracks, as well as several American and world tours. Then John continued as a soloist, recording memorable albums like The Hermit and The Black Balloon, before forming the John Renbourn Group, which integrated Indian tabla with guitar and jazz reeds. A subsequent partnership with Stefan Grossman yielded several albums and world tours.
Ship of Fools, a return to the ensemble format, explored John's interest in Celtic music, as does his latest recording Wheel of Fortune, with Scottish harper and storyteller Robin Williamson. Both Wheel of Fortune and the John Renbourn Group's Live in America were nominated for Grammy Awards. Faerieworlds Festival 2006 is proud to feature John Renbourn on Sunday July 30th.
John Renbourn plays a lot of Celtic traditional music, and he plays it surpassingly well. But he is also an eclectic who is liable to throw in jazz pieces, revamped soul music and whatever strikes his fancy. He brandishes a haunting technique, but by and large he does not use it to daunt. His music is first of all a music of feeling."
-Robert Palmer
New York Times
"...delicate, but with full resonance and chime, and it will make happy any listener enthralled by the drama of one man and one guitar turning a host of influences into a singular and highly spiritual impression."
-Bob Blumenthal
Boston Globe

"...That is where the ethereal tones of Woodland’s music takes you. Back, not to a place where childhood daydreams danced, but to ancient Celtic myth where everything on the earth had a consciousness and was vibrant with living spirit.”
-Sandy Moss
The Daily Courier, AZ
“When we heard the music of Woodland, we thought how wonderful it was and we were intrigued with the possibilities of how ideas sort of flow outward and get larger... We just wanted to help, encourage and expand the world. We put my images together with the music and we received a delighted reaction from the audience.”

TRILLIAN GREEN
For years, Trillian Green dazzled audiences with their raw acoustic psycho-tantric dance music. The trio is comprised of Christine Gunn on cello, Ben Klein on flute, and Jarrod Kaplan on percussion
Founded on the wooded trails of the Oregon Country Fair in the early 90's, Trillian Green is known for their ability to inspire audiences to get up and stomp wildly to their energized celto-tribal acoustic sounds. Trillian Green returns to the forests outside Eugene, Oregon at Faerieworlds this year on Sunday July 30th.
"The cello, flute, and percussion danced across the stage lit by three candelabras... The flute was given new dimension and depth with the undertones of the cello... Add the percussion, and you get a musical ensemble that’s skill is only surpassed by their enthusiasm. If I had to pick one word to describe the entire evening, it would be fervor."

KAN'NAL
Explosions of fire. Thrumming, primal rhythm. Dancers swirling in whirls of diaphanous white. Machetes spinning and clashing. Ancient instruments and futuristic technologies. Mythic archetypes – skeletons, deer, wondrous female warriors – coming to life. Seduction. Danger. Freedom.
And we’re only talking about the first minute or so after Kan’Nal takes the stge.
These performances surpass what people expect. You can’t exactly call them concerts; instead Kan’Nal has created its own ”Shamanic Rock” – personal ritual that stirs the emotions – fear, desire, ecstasy – in a way that makes this group much more than just a band.
"...the pulsating beats and hypnotic melodies that define the genre go back much further, to a time when sounds came not from computer chips but wooden blocks and animal skins."
-Dirt Magazine
